Emma Hitt Nichols, PhD

I’m Dr Emma Hitt Nichols. I help healthcare professionals, scientists, and graduate students explore the field of freelance medical writing so that they can transition into a lucrative career that allows them to set their own hours and work remotely.

If you’re reading this, you may have heard about my 6-Week Course, which has helped hundreds of people transition into a career in freelance medical writing. Unlike some other courses out there, this course offers actual paying work upon completion of 5 of the 6 feedback tests, and our writers tend to work with us for years. The course will also give you information about how to get other paying clients based on my 20+ years of being a full-time medical writer so that you can seek out multiple clients and build your business.

You will need to have a background in science, such as an MD, PharmD, DVM, PA, or a science PhD, as well as native-level English and writing ability. If you have that background, and do the work required, the course will help you get you started in own freelance medical writing business.

This course isn’t for everyone, but if you are a burned out healthcare provider or scientist, this course is a path to a new career. With some dedication and effort you’ll be able to start a lucrative work-from-anywhere career that will allow you to work on your own schedule, become your own boss, and spend your time in any way you see fit. If you dedicate yourself to the process, it can happen in as little as 3-6 months.

It’s not just any career, but one that will use your scientific background and won’t waste all those hard-earned years in medical school or graduate school. It also pays 6 figures if you bring the skillset, work ethic, and follow my advice.

I hope you will allow me to be your guide.

With the 6-Week Course, you will…

  • learn everything you need to know to set up your freelance medical writing business with self-paced online modules teaching you about the field of medical writing
  • be able to access our private members-only platform, make connections with medical writers, and get your questions answered
  • prepare samples as part of the course, get feedback, and then use these samples to get work from prospective clients
  • have the opportunity to subcontract as a medical writer with Dr. Hitt Nichols’ company, Nascent Medical, LLC.*

* Please note: becoming a subcontractor is contingent upon passing 5 of the 6 feedback modules, having an advanced science degree, and writing with fluent, native-level English. You can still sign up, but we will not be able to give you work if your English is non-native. Sorry. This is a real business with real clients. We do have writers who are non-native, but we can’t tell that from their writing.

About one-third of the people who sign up to the course finish 5 out of 6 feedback tests, and so far, all of the people who have finished have been offered work.

We pay $100/per hour for hourly projects, which represents about half of our projects. Flat rate projects are also offered, and are just that, so you need to decide whether you want to take something on based on your ability to complete the work.

If you’re already a freelance medical writer,
you should probably not take this course. By definition, you already know how to get clients and might even make a better hourly rate. Plus, you might find the feedback modules a “time suck,” as one person so eloquently put it. 🙂

This course is for burned out clinicians and scientists who don’t mind putting a little effort in
but are not sure where to start. That’s who I’m here to help.

When you get through 5 of the 6 feedback modules, we will always try to get you assigned to a project, but we are under no obligation to keep giving you work, and you don’t owe us anything either. Most of our subcontractors end up working with us for years though, and we so value and appreciate them

2024 Update

Even with the advent of generative AI, freelance medical writing is still an excellent career choice, but please go here to access a free course on AI in medical writing that will help you implement the latest technology.

Although I went to an excellent graduate school, it was a pretty miserable experience for me. One day in lab, I was about to quit because I just couldn’t see how I could keep going. But I also didn’t want to waste all the years I had spent slogging away at it either. It struck me that I had always loved writing, and I wondered if I could somehow combine writing with science. It turned out that science writing (which for me, later became medical writing) was a “thing,” and the rest, well… here we are.

With renewed purpose, I made myself finish my PhD, and I vowed at that time that if I could make something of this medical writing career, that I would always try to give back to those who were also struggling on their path and for whom this work might be a good fit. It turns out there are so many doctors, grad students, post docs, and academics who do not love what they do. Medicine, in particular, seems to have become increasingly burdensome to those who practice it.

I spent the first few years as a full-time freelance medical writer, and in recent years have been running my company, Nascent Medical, LLC, which continues to grow beyond any expectation that I ever had. Most people who complete my course end up having Nascent as one of their first clients.

I am so fortunate because of my career choice to spend all kinds of time with my dear husband, Nick, and my daughter, whose school bus I met daily since kindergarten.

With this course and your effort, I hope I can help you achieve the same kind of remote work-life balance using your science background and writing ability to make an excellent income.  Check out the free content here
